3.Laboratory Notebook Seminar

○Background  News of the research misconduct and plagiarism was reported in recent years. After that, the Science Council of Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry have suggested that it should be important for researchers and research institutions to share an awareness of the importance of proving their research attitude and integrity for the sound development of science.

○Significance The development of science and technology in Japan requires education from a global standard perspective. However, in reality universities in Japan do not provide proper education on the most fundamental aspect of the writing of laboratory notebooks. It is very important for researchers as well as students to understand the importance of recording their research in a way that justifying in their research and to accumulate experience, whether they go on to academia or industry in the future.
   
 ○Objective Intellectual Property is one of the indicators for the social implementation of research. It is extremely important to have clear experimental methods and results that can be used as the basis for the creation of detailed statement, etc., as well as for the reproduction of experiments. Researchers and graduates involved in R&D project of the "Toyama Pharmaceutical Valley Development Consortium", as well as undergraduates assigned to laboratory, deepen their understanding of the importance of laboratory notebooks and how to create and use them, and practice, which will upgrade the university’s research level.
   
 ○Characteristics of the laboratory notebook seminar at the university
The university has the vice director of R&D bases project of the "Toyama Pharmaceutical Valley Development Consortium", who was engaged in R&D as the director at a major foreign pharmaceutical company for many years, and has also taught in academia. The first step in fostering researchers at mega pharma is to teach them how to record laboratory notebooks correctly, and they are also required to thoroughly understand the importance of records that can be used as the basis for intellectual property and productization. As stated in the basic policy of the grant for creation of local universities and regional industries, the university has been continuously conducting seminars to enable researchers and students to create global standard laboratory notebooks as part of activities aimed at "strengthening the functions of universities and creating local universities with overwhelming strengths in specific fields that will be the driving force for regional industries vitalization.” (Conducted a total of 8 times from 2020 through December 2022 (Language: Japanese and English))
