Environmental Literacy Education for a Sustainable Society

Toyama Prefectural University (TPU) needs those who have broad range of vision and ethical sense of environment, “environmental literacy”for a sustainable society.
TPU is developing an educational program to ensure that all university graduates are environmentally literate and have the awareness and understanding to be ecologically responsible citizens.

This program has the four following characteristics:

(1)Take advantage of local resources, such as protecting natural settings and historical experiences from devastating environmental pollutions in the 1970s to present global environmental problems in Toyama Prefecture.
(2)Feasibility of conducting environmental educational programs in all departments in a small scale university such as TPU.
(3)Systematic and integrated educational programs from introduction to a specific major.
(4)Experience-based programs including eco-tour and campus field activities, and eco-point systems to encourage students to learn independently.

Through this educational approach, TPU will cultivate the future engineers who will create environmentally-friendly technologies to support a sustainable society. Furthermore, we aim to show the model of environmental education that should be carried out in every higher education system.

Educational program for first year students and second year students
(1)Experience-based program; Eco-tour Ⅰ

Students learn about nature, history and actions of the environmental problems in Toyama Prefecture through experience of a site visit.

(2)Integrated subjects; Environmentology Ⅰ・Ⅱ

EnvironmentologyⅠandⅡdeal with the natural science and social science/technological aspects of the environmental problem, respectively.

(3)Participation / action-based program; campus field activities

Students participate in actions of improvement of the environmental problems on campus.

Educational program for third year students and fourth year students
(1)Specialized subjects on environment

These subjects include Environmental Management, Life Cycle Assessment, Green Chemistry, and related subjects.

(2)Experience-based program; Eco-tour Ⅱ

Students learn how knowledge and technology learned in former lectures are applied to real environmental problems in local companies through Eco-tour Ⅱ.

(3)Experience-based program; Field practice for students of Department of Environmental Engneering

Field practice is a unique educational experience for better understanding of the entire river basin environment and consists of“field tours”and“field research”.

(4)Special lectures on environmental issues

Students learn about the latest environmental problems and other environmental issues from front-line researchers and managers.

Eco-point system

Students are given eco-points as an index of the achievement of environmental education depending on their degree. The university’s original titles, such as“Environment Meister”or“Eco-student”are given to the students who acquired these points systematically. These titles will aid in job hunting according to the appeal of the careers of the students.
